AEO and GEO Explained: How to Get Your Coimbatore Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
Quick answer
AEO (answer engine optimisation) shapes your content so it can be lifted as a direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimisation) helps AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews understand your business and mention it in their answers. Nobody can buy or guarantee an AI mention. You can raise your chances by keeping your site readable by search crawlers, putting short direct answers under clear question headings, keeping your business details identical everywhere online, adding accurate schema markup, and earning genuine reviews and mentions on other trusted sites. For most businesses, good AEO and GEO is simply good SEO done carefully.
More people now ask questions instead of typing keywords. Instead of "dentist RS Puram", someone might ask ChatGPT, "Which dental clinic in RS Puram is good for root canal treatment and open on Sunday?" Instead of scrolling ten blue links, they read one written answer, often with a few businesses named in it.
So how do you become one of the names in that answer? This article explains the jargon, what is actually known about how these tools choose sources, and what you can do without wasting money on hype.
What do AEO and GEO actually mean?
These are new labels for an old idea: make it easy for machines to understand you and easy for people to trust you.
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimisation is about writing content that answers a specific question so clearly that a search engine or voice assistant can pick it up as the answer. Think of Google's featured snippets, the "People also ask" boxes or a voice assistant reading out one paragraph. The habit behind AEO is simple: ask the question as a heading, then answer it in two or three plain sentences straight away.
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimisation is about AI tools that write a fresh answer each time, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. These tools read many sources and summarise them. GEO is the work of making sure your business is one of the sources they find, understand and are willing to name. The term comes from a research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, Tanmay Rajpurohit, Ashwin Kalyan, Karthik Narasimhan and Ameet Deshpande (Princeton University, IIT Delhi and independent researchers). It was first posted in November 2023 and published at the ACM KDD conference in 2024, and it studied how content can become more visible in AI-generated answers.
How are SEO, AEO and GEO different?
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your pages in search results | Be picked as the direct answer | Be named or cited in AI-written answers |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results, Maps | Featured snippets, voice answers, "People also ask" | ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| Main habits | Technical health, relevant pages, links | Question headings, short direct answers | Clear facts, consistency, trust and mentions across the web |
In practice they overlap heavily. If your site is not crawlable and trusted for normal search, it is unlikely to be used by AI answers either. That is why we treat them as one piece of work on our SEO services in Coimbatore page, under "AI answer readiness".
How do ChatGPT and Google AI decide which businesses to recommend?
Nobody outside these companies knows the full details, and anyone who claims to is overselling. But there is useful public information.
What does Google say about AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google's Search Central documentation, AI features and your website, says the normal SEO best practices still apply to AI features, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google also says you do not need special AI text files or special schema to appear.
That is good news for small businesses: the work that helps you in Google Search also helps in Google's AI answers. Be careful with anyone selling a separate, expensive "AI ranking" product for Google.
What does OpenAI say about ChatGPT search?
OpenAI's crawler documentation explains that OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. A separate crawler, GPTBot, is for training AI models, and you can allow or block it separately.
So the first technical check is simple: make sure your website's robots.txt file, your hosting and any firewall or CDN are not blocking the crawlers you want to reach you.
What else seems to matter?
From the public guidance and from how these tools describe their own answers, a few things come up again and again:
- Can the tool read your page? Important text should be real text, not only inside images or PDFs.
- Is the answer easy to find? A short, direct answer near the top of a page is easier to quote than a long story.
- Do the facts agree everywhere? If your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial and Facebook all give the same name, address, phone and services, the tool can be more confident.
- Do other people talk about you? Genuine reviews, local news mentions, association listings and partner websites give an AI tool independent reasons to name you.
- Is the page fresh and accurate? Out-of-date prices, closed branches or old phone numbers can confuse both people and machines.
Why should a Coimbatore business care about AI search?
Because local questions are exactly the kind people ask assistants. "Good eye hospital near Peelamedu for cataract surgery." "Which coaching centre in Gandhipuram is good for NEET?" "Wedding silk saree shops in Coimbatore with parking." These are long, specific questions, and a written answer suits them well.
There is a second reason. Plenty of small business websites are thin: a home page, a phone number and a gallery. When an AI tool looks for who offers Sunday appointments or which areas a plumber covers, a business that has written those facts clearly has an edge.
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI?
Here is a practical checklist. None of it is a trick. All of it also helps your normal Google rankings and your customers.
1. Make sure crawlers can reach your site
- Check your robots.txt file. It should not block Googlebot, Bingbot or OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in those tools.
- Ask your web developer or host whether any firewall or "bot protection" setting is blocking search crawlers.
- Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Microsoft Copilot, for example, draws on Bing's search results.
2. Answer real questions in plain words
Write down the ten questions customers ask you most on the phone or at the counter. Price ranges, timings, parking, languages spoken, areas covered, how long a job takes. Then answer each one on your site with a question heading and a two- or three-line answer right below it.
This is the AEO habit, and it is how we write our own pages, including this one. If you want help writing these pages, our content marketing service covers FAQ and service page writing in English and Tamil.
3. Give each service its own clear page
An AI tool answering "root canal treatment in Saravanampatti" looks for a page about exactly that. One general "Services" page with ten bullet points gives it little to work with. A dedicated page explaining what is involved, who does it and where you are gives it much more.
4. Keep your business facts identical everywhere
Pick one official version of your name, address, phone, hours and services, and use it on your website, your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook and Instagram. Coimbatore addresses are often written several ways, with landmarks, alternate spellings or "Kovai" instead of "Coimbatore". Choose one format and stick to it. Our guide on local SEO in Coimbatore explains how to clean up these listings step by step.
5. Add accurate schema markup
Schema markup is a small block of code that labels facts for machines: this is a business, this is its address, these are its opening hours, this page is an FAQ, this article was written by this person. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, but accurate structured data still helps search engines understand your pages. The key rule is that the markup must match what is visible on the page.
6. Show the real people behind the business
Put your name, your role and your experience on the site. Add an author line to articles. Link to your LinkedIn profile. AI tools and search engines both look for signs that real, accountable people stand behind the information. Fake "expert" profiles do more harm than good.
7. Earn genuine mentions and reviews
This is the slowest part and the most important. AI tools are more likely to name a business that other people talk about. Ways to earn that honestly:
- Ask every happy customer for a Google review, without offering gifts for it
- Get listed with your trade association, such as a local chamber, medical association or builders' body, where you are genuinely a member
- Share useful knowledge with local news, college events or community groups
- Partner with complementary businesses that can link to you, such as an interior designer and a furniture maker
8. Keep everything up to date
Change your hours on Google before Pongal and Deepavali. Remove closed branches. Update prices when they change. Old information can send a customer to the wrong place.
What should I avoid with AEO and GEO?
- Anyone promising "guaranteed ChatGPT ranking". These tools do not sell positions, and answers change from one question to the next. Our guide on SEO costs in Coimbatore lists more red flags to watch for in any quote.
- Stuffing pages with questions nobody asks. Write for real customers. Machines can tell padded content from useful content, and so can people.
- Fake reviews or fake "best of" lists. Paying for fake mentions risks penalties and damages trust.
- Spending on special AI files before the basics. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files to appear in its AI features. Fix crawling, content and consistency first. Files like llms.txt are optional extras, not a shortcut.
How do I check whether AI tools mention my business?
There is no complete report for this yet, so a simple manual routine helps:
- Write down five to ten questions a real customer might ask, such as "best bakery for birthday cakes near Saibaba Colony".
- Once a month, ask each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Google, using the same wording each time.
- Note whether your business is named, which sources are cited and whether the facts are correct.
- In Google Search Console, watch your overall impressions and clicks. Google reports AI Overview and AI Mode traffic as part of normal Web search traffic.
Results vary by person, location and day, so look for patterns over months. If an AI tool gets a fact wrong, correct it on your own site and listings and wait for the tools to catch up.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
There is no fixed timeline. Crawling and updating can take days to months, and well-known sites may see changes sooner. For a new business, build the foundations now (clear pages, consistent facts, genuine reviews) and check regularly, rather than expect a result by a date.
We are a new agency ourselves, so we are building our own AI visibility the same way we suggest here,: question headings with short answers, consistent business details and accurate schema on our own pages. We will share what we learn honestly as it happens.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO helps your pages rank in normal search results. AEO, or answer engine optimisation, shapes content so it can be lifted as a direct answer. GEO, or generative engine optimisation, helps AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google AI understand and cite your business. All three depend on clear, trustworthy, crawlable pages.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. You cannot buy a place in ChatGPT's normal answers, and no agency can guarantee one. You can improve your chances by keeping your site crawlable, answering real questions clearly, keeping your details consistent and earning genuine mentions and reviews.
Do I need a separate strategy for Google AI Overviews?
Not really. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra requirements. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in Google Search. Focus on helpful, accurate content and a technically healthy site.
Should I block AI crawlers like GPTBot?
It is your choice. Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI not to use your content for training models. Blocking OAI-SearchBot, a separate crawler, stops your site appearing in ChatGPT search answers. Many businesses that want visibility allow OAI-SearchBot even if they block GPTBot.
Does schema markup help with AI search?
It helps search engines understand your pages, and accurate business, FAQ and article markup is good practice. Google says no special schema is required for its AI features. The markup must always match what visitors can see on the page.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It is optional. Google says you do not need new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in its AI features. For a small business, fixing crawling, content and consistent business details matters far more.
How can I tell if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Ask it the questions your customers would ask, in the same words, once a month, and note whether you are named and which sources are cited. Repeat in Gemini, Copilot and Google. Answers vary, so look for patterns over time.
