GMB Charges Explained: What a Google Business Profile Really Costs

Searching for "GMB charges" usually means one of two things: you want to know whether Google bills you for a business listing, or someone has quoted you a fee and you are not sure it is fair. The direct answer is that Google charges nothing to create, verify or keep a Google Business Profile (the listing once called Google My Business, or GMB). Any money you spend goes to optional extras: help from a person or agency, photography, or paid Google Ads. This article separates what is genuinely free from what is worth paying for, and shows the warning signs of listing scams.

If you want the work done for you, see our page on Google Business Profile optimisation in Coimbatore.

Does Google charge for a Business Profile?

No. Creating the profile, verifying it, adding photos, replying to reviews, publishing updates and reading the performance numbers are all free inside Google's own tools. Google does not sell "premium" placement on the map through the profile, and it does not charge a yearly renewal.

The name change confuses people. "Google My Business" became "Google Business Profile" a few years ago. The old app was retired and most edits now happen directly on Google Search or Maps when you are signed in. If someone tells you that you must pay to "upgrade" to the new version, that is not true.

What do people actually pay for around GMB?

When you see GMB optimisation charges quoted by freelancers or agencies, the fee is for their time and skill, not for Google. Typical paid tasks include:

  • Set-up and clean-up. Choosing the right primary and secondary categories, writing a description, adding services and products, fixing wrong pins or duplicate listings.
  • Ongoing upkeep. Weekly or monthly posts, fresh photos, answering questions, replying to reviews and watching for unwanted edits by the public.
  • Review routine. Building a simple, policy-safe way to ask happy customers for reviews.
  • Reporting. Tracking calls, direction requests and website clicks over time.
  • Recovery work. Help with suspended or hijacked profiles, which can take patience and careful documentation.

At Xtrodinry, profile work is not sold as a separate product. It sits inside our SEO plans, which start with Local Start, which costs ₹12,000–15,000 monthly for one location; the full plan details are on our service page. Quotes elsewhere in Coimbatore vary widely, so compare what is actually included rather than the headline number.

What can you do yourself for free?

A lot. If you have an hour or two, you can handle the basics without paying anyone:

  1. Open Google Maps and look up your shop by name. Claim the listing if it already exists, or add a new one if it does not.
  2. Complete verification using the method Google offers you (it may be a video recording, phone, email or postcard, depending on the business).
  3. Pick the most specific primary category, for example "Pediatric dentist" rather than just "Dentist" if that fits.
  4. Enter the same name, address and phone number you use on your website and on WhatsApp Business.
  5. Add real photos of your shopfront, team and work. A clear entrance photo helps first-time visitors find you in crowded streets like Oppanakara Street or Cross Cut Road.
  6. Set accurate hours, including special hours for festivals such as Pongal and Deepavali.
  7. Reply to every review, briefly and politely.

Google also lets you list services with descriptions, which helps the profile show for more specific searches.

Beware: calls asking you to pay to keep your listing

Many small business owners in India receive calls claiming to be "from Google" and warning that the listing will be removed unless a fee is paid. Google's own guidance says it does not charge for Business Profiles and does not make unsolicited calls threatening removal. Treat these as red flags:

  • Pressure to pay today "to avoid suspension".
  • Requests for your Google account password or one-time codes.
  • Promises of a guaranteed first position on Maps.
  • Offers to post large numbers of reviews for a price. Fake reviews break Google's policies and can get the profile restricted.

If you hire help, give them manager access from inside the profile settings instead of sharing your login. You stay the owner and can remove them any time.

Paid ads on Maps vs a free profile

There is one way to pay Google for visibility near the map: Google Ads. Search and Performance Max campaigns can show ads on Maps and in local results when your profile is linked to the ad account. That is billed per click or interaction, from a budget you set, and it is completely separate from the free profile. Trades that live on phone calls can read how that side works under Google Ads for local service businesses.

Paying for ads does not raise your unpaid map ranking. The free listing still depends on relevance, distance and prominence.

Should you pay for GMB optimisation?

Ask yourself three questions:

  • Do I have the time? Upkeep takes a little time every week. If it keeps slipping, paying for help can make sense.
  • Is my category competitive? A dental clinic in RS Puram faces more competition than a niche industrial supplier in an estate.
  • Do I have problems I cannot fix? Duplicates, a wrong pin, a suspension or a listing someone else controls are worth expert help.

Example (illustrative, not a client result): A mobile repair shop near Gandhipuram bus stand has a verified profile but the category is set to "Electronics store" and there are no photos. Correcting the category to "Mobile phone repair shop", adding services and uploading entrance photos are free changes the owner can make in an afternoon. Paying for help only becomes relevant if the owner wants a steady review routine and monthly posts handled.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free trial or paid upgrade for Google Business Profile?

There is no trial and no paid tier. Every feature in the profile is available to all verified businesses at no cost. Paid products such as Google Ads and Google Workspace are separate services with their own billing.

Which free business listing sites should a Coimbatore business use besides Google?

Start with the ones your customers actually use: Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Justdial and your industry's own directories. Keep the name, address and phone number identical on each. A few accurate listings are better than dozens of half-filled ones.

Does Google charge for verifying a business by video or postcard?

No. Verification is free whichever method Google offers. If verification fails, you can retry or contact Google Business Profile support at no charge. Nobody can sell you a faster "paid verification".

Can I hand my profile to an agency without losing ownership?

Yes. In the profile settings, add the agency as a manager rather than an owner. Managers can edit and reply to reviews, but the primary owner can remove them at any time and keeps full control of the listing.

Why do GMB optimisation charges differ so much between providers?

Providers include very different work under the same name. One may only fill in missing fields once, while another handles weekly posts, photos, review replies and reporting. Ask for a written list of monthly tasks before you compare prices.
