Small Business SEO Checklist: DIY Steps You Can Tick Off This Month

Hand ticking items on a handwritten checklist in a notebook

This small business SEO checklist is for owners who want to do the groundwork themselves before spending on an agency. It covers six areas in the order that usually brings results fastest for a local shop, clinic or service business in India: basic setup, your Google Business Profile, website pages, content, trust signals and a short monthly routine. Each item is a yes-or-no task. Work through it with a cup of filter coffee, mark what is done, and you will know exactly where the gaps are. Prefer to delegate? Our small business SEO in Coimbatore service covers the same ground.

Before you start: the 30-minute setup

These tools are free and give you the data you need for everything else.

  • Google Search Console is set up for your domain and the sitemap is submitted.
  • Google Analytics 4 is installed and you can see today's visitors.
  • You know who controls your domain, hosting and website login, and the accounts are in the business's name, not a former developer's.
  • Your website loads on HTTPS (the padlock shows in the browser).
  • You have written down your five most important services and the areas you serve, such as Saravanampatti, Kovaipudur or the whole of Coimbatore district.

That last list guides every other decision.

Google Business Profile checklist

For most local businesses, the map listing brings more calls than the website in the early months.

  • The profile is claimed and verified by the business owner.
  • The primary category is the most specific one that fits.
  • Hours are correct, with special hours set for public holidays and festival days.
  • Services or products are listed with short descriptions.
  • At least a handful of real photos are uploaded: front entrance, inside, team at work.
  • The phone number on the profile matches the website and WhatsApp Business.
  • Owner replies appear under recent reviews.

Our page on Google Business Profile optimisation explains each of these in more depth.

Website pages checklist

Google can only rank a page for a service if that page exists and is clear.

  • Each main service has its own page instead of all services crammed onto one.
  • Every page title says what the page offers and where, in under about 60 characters.
  • Every page has one main heading (H1) that matches the title's intent.
  • Your full business name, address and phone number appear in the footer as text, not only in an image.
  • Phone numbers are tap-to-call links on mobile.
  • Pages load reasonably fast on a mid-range phone; check with Google PageSpeed Insights.
  • There is a simple contact page with a map and directions.
  • No important page shows "Lorem ipsum", template text or broken links.

Content checklist

Content does not have to mean a daily blog. It means answering what customers ask.

  • You have listed the ten questions customers ask most on calls or WhatsApp.
  • The answers appear on the relevant service pages or as short articles.
  • Service pages mention practical details: timelines, what is included, areas covered, how pricing is worked out.
  • Photos are your own work rather than stock images where possible, with descriptive file names and alt text.
  • If customers search in Tamil, you have at least one page or section written properly in Tamil, not machine-translated.

Example (illustrative, not a client result): A physiotherapy clinic in Race Course notices patients often ask "Do I need a doctor's referral?" and "How many sessions will I need?". Adding a clear section with honest answers to its back-pain treatment page gives searchers and Google a better reason to choose that page than a competitor's generic text.

Trust and reviews checklist

People and search engines both look for proof that you are real and reliable.

  • You ask satisfied customers for a Google review, using a short link, soon after the job is done.
  • You never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, and never buy them.
  • Your business name, address and phone are identical on Justdial, Bing Places, Facebook and any industry directory you use.
  • Your website has an About page with the owner's real name and photo.
  • Any certifications or memberships mentioned are ones you actually hold.

Monthly maintenance checklist

Set a recurring reminder for the first Monday of each month. It takes about an hour.

  • Check Search Console for new indexing problems and the top searches bringing clicks.
  • Post at least one update or offer on your Google Business Profile.
  • Reply to every new review.
  • Add or improve one page, based on a question you heard that month.
  • Check that your phone number, hours and festival timings are still right everywhere.
  • Note calls, form enquiries and direction requests so you can see the trend over months.

Common mistakes to avoid while working through the list

Owners who tackle SEO alone often make the same few slips. They change the business name on the profile to include keywords, which breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension. They build one long page listing every service instead of separate pages. They chase dozens of directories and forget to keep the important ones accurate. And they judge progress after two weeks. Go slowly, change one thing at a time, and keep a simple log of what you changed and when, so you can link later improvements to specific actions.

When the DIY route stops working

This checklist will take many small businesses a long way. It is time to consider help when the basics are done but enquiries are flat for several months, when competitors in your category are clearly investing heavily, or when technical warnings keep appearing that you cannot fix. Even then, keep this list: it is the same foundation any good provider will check first.

Frequently asked questions

Which item on this checklist should I do first?

Start with your Google Business Profile and Search Console. The profile can bring calls quickly for local searches, and Search Console shows whether Google can read your website at all. Everything else builds on those two.

Do I need paid SEO tools to follow this list?

No. Google Search Console, Google Analytics, PageSpeed Insights and the profile dashboard are free and cover every item here. Paid tools mainly save time on larger sites or competitor research.

How do I know if my DIY SEO is working?

Compare month to month: clicks and impressions in Search Console, calls and direction requests from the profile, and enquiries you can trace to search. Look for a steady trend over three to six months rather than daily ups and downs.

Is it safe to copy service descriptions from a competitor's website?

No. Copied text gives Google no reason to prefer your page and may be filtered as duplicate content. It can also raise copyright issues. Write in your own words about how you actually work.
