How to Write a Blog Post That Ranks on Google: A Step-by-Step Guide

Quick answer

A blog post ranks when it is the most helpful answer to a real search. Pick a topic people actually search for, check what already ranks to understand the intent, answer the main question directly near the top, organise the rest with clear H2 and H3 headings, add first-hand detail only you can give, link to your related service pages and posts, write a clear title and meta description, and update the post when things change.

Most small business blogs do not fail because of bad writing. They fail because they answer questions nobody asks, or they answer them less helpfully than pages already on Google. This guide is the process we follow when we write posts for clients, including this one.

Step 1: Choose a topic with real search demand

Start with what customers ask you. Every question you answer on the phone or WhatsApp is a possible post. Then check that people search for it:

  • Type the question into Google and watch the autocomplete suggestions.
  • Look at the "People also ask" box.
  • Check rough interest in Google Keyword Planner.
  • Look at Search Console for questions you already get impressions for.

Our keyword research guide explains each tool step by step.

Step 2: Check what already ranks

Search your main keyword and open the top results. Ask:

  • What type of page ranks? Guides, lists, comparisons, videos, product pages?
  • What questions do they answer?
  • What is missing? Local detail, examples, a clear answer, updated information?

If the top results are all product pages, a blog post may not be the right format. If they are all guides, your guide needs to be more useful than theirs, not just longer.

Step 3: Match the search intent

Intent is what the searcher wants. "How to" searches want steps. "Best" searches want comparisons. "Cost" searches want factors and examples. "Vs" searches want a clear verdict. Shape your post around that need, and keep the reader's goal in mind from start to finish.

Step 4: Answer the question near the top

Put a short, direct answer in the first few lines: two to four sentences that someone could read and leave satisfied. Then explain in more depth below. This helps readers, and it gives search engines and AI answer tools a clear passage to understand. Our guide to AEO and GEO explains why clear answers matter for AI search too.

Step 5: Build a clear structure

  • One H1: the post title.
  • H2 headings for each main section, often phrased as the questions people ask.
  • H3 headings for steps or sub-points within a section.
  • Short paragraphs, bullet lists and tables where they make things easier to scan.
  • An FAQ at the end for related questions.

Before writing, draft the headings only. If the headings alone tell the story, the structure is right.

Step 6: Write for people, with real experience

Google's guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content asks whether content shows first-hand experience and expertise, and whether readers will leave feeling they have learned enough. In practice:

  • Use examples from your own work and city.
  • Explain what you would actually advise a customer.
  • Be honest about trade-offs and when something is not right for the reader.
  • Avoid filler introductions and repeating the same point.
  • Write in plain words. If a technical term is needed, explain it once.

Step 7: Support claims with sources

If you mention a statistic, a rule or a date, link to the original source, ideally an official one. Never invent numbers. One well-sourced fact is more convincing than five vague claims.

Step 8: Add internal links

Link from the post to:

  • The service page most relevant to the topic, using descriptive link text
  • One or two related blog posts that go deeper on a sub-topic

Then link back to the new post from older, related posts. Internal links help readers find the next step and help Google understand how your pages relate. Our service page writing guide covers the other side of this.

Step 9: Write the title and meta description

  • Title tag: include the main keyword naturally, make it specific, and keep it short enough to show in full on most screens.
  • Meta description: one or two sentences that tell the searcher what they will get. It does not directly affect rankings, but it affects clicks.
  • URL: short and readable, using the main words.

Step 10: Add helpful images

Use images that explain something: a screenshot, a diagram, a real photo of your work. Compress them, give them descriptive file names and alt text, and set their dimensions so the page does not jump while loading.

Step 11: Publish, share and measure

  1. Publish and check the page on your phone.
  2. Make sure it is in your sitemap and request indexing in Search Console.
  3. Share it with customers who asked that question, and on your social channels.
  4. After a few weeks, check Search Console for the queries it appears for.

Step 12: Update it

Posts can lose rankings as information ages. Review your important posts every few months. Update facts, add new questions you have been asked, improve weak sections and change the "last updated" date only when you make real changes.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a blog post be to rank?

There is no ideal word count. A post should be as long as it needs to fully answer the question, and no longer. Compare what already ranks, then aim to be more useful, not just longer.

How often should a small business publish blog posts?

A steady pace you can maintain with good quality is better than many rushed posts. For most small businesses, a few well-researched posts a month is plenty.

Can AI-written content rank?

Google's guidance focuses on whether content is helpful and reliable, not how it was produced. Content made mainly to manipulate rankings, however it is produced, goes against its spam policies. Add real expertise and check every fact.

How long does a new blog post take to rank?

It varies with competition and your site's authority. Some posts appear within weeks; competitive topics can take months. Our guide on SEO timelines explains why.

Should every blog post link to a service page?

Where it is relevant, yes. A blog post often answers an early question, and a link to the matching service page gives ready readers a clear next step.
