Performance Max vs Search Campaigns: Which Should You Run?

Quick answer

Search campaigns show text ads to people who type matching keywords, and give you close control over keywords, ad text and reporting. Performance Max is one automated campaign that can show across Google's channels, including Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps, with Google choosing placements based on your conversion goals. For most local service and lead generation businesses, start with Search. Performance Max suits accounts with reliable conversion tracking and good creative, and online stores with a clean product feed. Many established accounts run both.

Google Ads now recommends Performance Max often, and many business owners wonder if they should switch everything to it. The answer depends on your goals, your data and how much control you need. This guide compares the two honestly.

What is a Search campaign?

A Search campaign shows text ads on Google search results when someone searches for words related to your keywords. Google's guide to choosing a campaign type describes Search as a way to reach people while they are actively searching for the products and services you offer. You write the ads, choose the keywords, set locations and budgets, and see which searches triggered your ads.

What is Performance Max?

Google describes Performance Max as a goal-based campaign type that lets advertisers access all Google Ads inventory from a single campaign. You provide goals, budgets, creative assets (headlines, images, videos, logos) and audience signals. Google's systems then decide where and when to show ads and which combination of assets to use, optimising towards your conversion goals with Smart Bidding.

What does research say about the two competing?

When both campaign types run in one account, they can be eligible for the same searches. An analysis published by Search Engine Land, based on Adalysis data from non-retail accounts, found that for overlapping search terms, Search campaigns had a higher conversion rate 84.18% of the time. The authors noted that Google does not publish cost data for Performance Max search terms, so return on spend could not be compared directly.

This does not mean Performance Max is bad. It reaches people and placements a Search campaign never will. It does mean that for your most important, high-intent keywords, a well-run Search campaign often deserves to stay in place.

When should you choose Search?

  • You are a local service business. Plumbers, clinics, coaching centres and repair services usually win on high-intent searches. Search gives you control over exactly which ones.
  • Your budget is limited. With a small budget, you want every rupee going to the searches most likely to convert.
  • Your conversion tracking is not reliable yet. Automation learns from conversions. If tracking is weak, Performance Max has little to learn from.
  • You need to see search terms. If knowing exactly what people searched matters to you, Search gives much clearer reporting.
  • You are new to Google Ads. Search is easier to understand, test and fix.

When should you choose Performance Max?

  • You run an online store. With a Merchant Center product feed, Performance Max can show your products across Shopping placements and more. Our Merchant Center setup guide covers the feed.
  • Your conversion tracking is solid. Purchases or qualified leads are tracked accurately, ideally with values.
  • You have strong creative. Good photos, logos and short videos give the campaign more to work with.
  • You want reach beyond search. YouTube, Display and Discover reach people before they search.
  • Your Search campaigns have hit their limit. If you are already capturing most relevant searches, Performance Max can find extra demand.

How to run both without wasting money

  1. Keep Search for your core keywords. Brand terms and your highest-intent service keywords should have their own Search campaigns. Google's rules generally prioritise a Search campaign when the query exactly matches one of its keywords.
  2. Feed Performance Max good data. Use only the conversion actions that represent real business value. If a form fill and a page view are both counted as conversions, the campaign will chase the easy one.
  3. Give it real creative. Use your own product and team photos, not generic stock.
  4. Add audience signals. Customer lists and website visitors help guide the campaign early on.
  5. Use the controls available. Check brand exclusions, URL expansion settings and account-level negatives in your account.
  6. Judge by business results. Compare leads that turned into customers or sales, not just platform-reported conversions.

Common mistakes

  • Switching off a profitable Search campaign because Google recommended Performance Max.
  • Launching Performance Max with weak or duplicate conversion tracking.
  • Letting the campaign send traffic to irrelevant pages through URL expansion.
  • Uploading low-quality images, so the campaign produces poor ads.
  • Judging results in the first week, before the campaign has learned.

Frequently asked questions

Is Performance Max better than Search?

Neither is better for every business. Search gives control and clear reporting for high-intent searches. Performance Max gives broader reach and automation, and works best with strong conversion data and good creative.

Can I run Performance Max and Search together?

Yes. Many accounts run both: Search to protect brand and core keywords, Performance Max to reach extra demand across Google's channels. Watch for overlap and judge results by real business outcomes.

Is Performance Max good for lead generation?

It can be, but only with reliable conversion tracking, ideally including which leads became customers. Without that, it may optimise for low-quality form fills. Many lead generation accounts start with Search.

Can I see search terms in Performance Max?

Reporting is more limited than in Search campaigns. Google provides insights and some search term data, but not the full detail of a Search campaign.

Do I need video for Performance Max?

Video is recommended, because the campaign can show on YouTube. If you do not provide one, Google may create one from your assets, which is rarely as good as your own.
