WordPress vs Shopify vs a Custom Website: Which Suits Your Business?

"Should we build on WordPress or Shopify?" is one of the first questions business owners in Coimbatore ask us, usually followed by "or should we get something custom made?" The honest answer is that each option is right for some businesses and wrong for others. The platform decides how easily you can update the site, how you sell online, who you depend on for fixes and how much ongoing work you sign up for.
This guide compares WordPress, Shopify and custom-built websites from the point of view of an Indian small business, without the sales pitch. If you would like us to recommend a platform for your situation, our website design service page explains how we plan builds.
WordPress in brief
WordPress is open-source software that powers a large share of the world's websites. You install it on hosting you choose, pick a theme and add features through plugins.
Where it is strong
- Very flexible. Almost any type of site, from a clinic to a news portal, can be built on it.
- Excellent for content. Pages, blog posts and categories are easy to manage.
- Huge pool of developers in India, including in Coimbatore, so you are not tied to one person.
- With the WooCommerce plugin it can also run an online store.
What to watch
- You are responsible for hosting, updates, backups and security, or you pay someone to handle them.
- Too many plugins slow the site down and create conflicts.
- Quality varies widely between themes and builders.
Shopify in brief
Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. You pay a monthly subscription, and Shopify handles hosting, security and the checkout.
Where it is strong
- Built for selling. Product listings, inventory, discounts, abandoned cart emails and order management come ready.
- Connects to Indian payment gateways and shipping aggregators through its settings and app store.
- Little technical upkeep. Shopify manages servers and security updates.
- Feeds easily into Google Merchant Center and Meta catalogues for shopping ads.
What to watch
- Ongoing subscription plus paid apps and, depending on your payment setup, transaction charges. Check current plans on Shopify's own pricing page, because they change.
- Less freedom for complex content sites or unusual page layouts.
- Moving away later takes planning, as some features live inside apps.
Custom-built websites in brief
A custom site is coded for your business, often with a modern framework, sometimes with a content management system connected behind it.
Where it is strong
- Built exactly around your workflows, such as dealer portals, quote calculators or booking rules.
- Can be very fast and lean, with no unused features.
- No platform subscription for the core site.
What to watch
- Every change may need a developer, unless an editing system is included.
- You depend on the team that built it, so documentation and code ownership matter.
- Usually takes longer to plan and build.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | WordPress | Shopify | Custom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Service and content sites | Online stores | Special workflows |
| Who hosts it | You or your provider | Shopify | You or your provider |
| Updates and security | Your responsibility | Handled by Shopify | Your developer |
| Selling online | Through WooCommerce | Built in | Built to order |
| Editing by your team | Easy | Easy | Depends on build |
| Lock-in risk | Low | Medium | Depends on code ownership |
Selling online in India: what changes the answer
If you plan to sell products, think about these before choosing:
- Catalogue size. A handful of products can live comfortably on WooCommerce. Thousands of variants, as with a Tiruppur garment brand selling sizes and colours, are easier to manage on Shopify.
- Payments. Confirm that your preferred payment gateway, UPI options and cash on delivery work with the platform you choose.
- Shipping. Check integration with the courier or aggregator you already use, including pincode serviceability.
- Marketplaces and ads. If you will run shopping ads, read our guides on Google Merchant Center in India and Meta catalogue ads setup. Product feeds are simpler when the platform supports them natively.
- Business to business orders. Wholesale pricing, minimum order quantities and quote requests often push manufacturers towards WordPress or a custom build.
SEO on each platform
All three can rank well. Google does not prefer one platform over another. What matters is how the site is set up:
- WordPress gives full control over titles, page addresses, redirects and structured data, usually through an SEO plugin.
- Shopify handles the basics well, but some page address patterns are fixed, and duplicate product addresses need care.
- Custom sites can be excellent for SEO if the developer builds in titles, sitemaps, clean page addresses and fast loading. If they do not, they can be invisible to Google.
Ask any developer how they will handle titles, descriptions, sitemaps and redirects before you sign. Our guide on what SEO is and how it works explains why these basics matter, and our SEO services page covers what we check.
Which one should you choose?
A practical rule of thumb by business type:
- Clinics, consultants, schools, contractors and service businesses: WordPress, or a lean custom site if speed and simplicity matter most.
- Retail brands selling directly to consumers online: Shopify in most cases.
- Manufacturers with dealer networks or quote-based sales: WordPress with custom features, or a custom build.
- Businesses with unusual processes, such as live inventory from an ERP: a custom build, planned carefully.
Example (illustrative, not a client result): A home-décor shop in RS Puram that wants to sell around two hundred products across India, run Instagram and Google shopping ads, and avoid server worries would usually be better served by Shopify. A precision engineering firm in Ganapathy that needs detailed capability pages and an RFQ form would usually fit WordPress better.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Will we sell online now, or within the next year?
- Who on our team will update the site, and how comfortable are they with technology?
- Who will handle updates, backups and security?
- Are the domain, hosting and platform accounts in our business name?
- If we change agencies later, can we take the site with us?
- What are the total running costs each year, including apps, plugins and hosting?
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify better than WordPress for SEO?
Neither is better by default. WordPress offers more control; Shopify is simpler to keep healthy. Good setup matters more than the platform.
Can I move from WordPress to Shopify later?
Yes, but plan redirects from old page addresses to new ones so you keep your search visibility. Treat it as a redesign project.
Is a custom website always more expensive?
It usually needs more planning and development time, but running costs can be lower without subscriptions. Compare the full picture over a few years, not only the build fee.
Can WooCommerce handle an Indian online store?
For small and medium catalogues, yes, provided hosting is good and the payment and shipping plugins are well maintained.
